The Native Americans lived in peace, they were nomads. Nomads are people who don't live in one place for a long time.
The tribes lived in peace as nomads before the white explorers arrived.
After using majority of their resources, The white people decided to move westward. By going into the frontier they will be going onto unknown land, inhabited by the natives.
Kill the Indian, save the man. That phrase was invented by Captain Richard Henry Pratt. The phrase means that in order to save the man the Indian culture must be sacrificed.
After Andrew Jackson approved The Indian Removal Act they started to prepare troops to go into the frontier, They tried driving out the Natives by killing off their food source, the buffalo. It is estimated that 200,000 were killed annually.
The Indian Removal Act was signed into law by President Andrew Jackson on May 28, 1830
The white people proceeded to kill many of the buffalo in order to remove the Indian's main food source. They made the Indians move off their land by foot. Forcing them to walk the trail of tears. It is estimated that more than 100,000 Indians died. The Indians that did not die ended up going and were forced to live on reservations. At that point, that is when they began to remove children from their families.
Between 25 and 35 percent of all American Indian children had been taken from their families, then placed in adoptive homes, foster homes, or institutions. Around 90 percent of those children were being raised by non-Indians. Many would never see their biological families again.
Even today people still live on reservations. They live in peace away from conflict. But they are still treated differently by racist people. There are 326 reservations still in the USA today
