On October 9, 2012 Malala was shot in a bus on her way back home from school. The man who shot Malala was named Ehsanullah Eshan. Malala was considered an enemy to the Taliban because she wanted all girls to have an education. After Malala was shot in the head, she rushed to the hospital.

How will we pay, and where is my family?
Malala was taken to a hospital in Birmingham, England. When Malala arrived to the hospital, she had to have an emergency surgery that repaired her skull so it could be reconstructed. When Malala had finally woke from her coma she was overcome with the thought of medical bills in her mind and how her family would be able to afford it but most importantly, where was Malala's family? At the time, Malala's family was still in Pakistan but soon they would be next to Malala's side in the hospital.

When the Taliban shot me it only made me stronger
On Malala's 16th birthday (July 12th) she was invited by Ban-Ki-moon to speak for the Youth Assembly at the United Nations in New York. On that day, July 12th, 2013 it was officially declared "Malala day." In Malala's speech, she talked about non-violence, education, global unity and women's rights. Malala's most famous quote from that speech was "Books and pens are our most powerful weapons in the fight against illiteracy, poverty and terrorism.
