The narrator receives a letter from his old friend, Usher, asking for him to come visit him while he is sick.
After entering the house, the narrator feels unnerved. The narrator finally meets Usher in his room. When Usher sees who is in his room he is excited to see his old friend.
On the Narrators first night in the house, lady Madeline dies. Usher does not want an autopsy on her, so he wants the narrator to help her lay her to rest her in the dungeon.
After laying her in the tomb usher starts going crazy. He runs from room to room and singing songs. The Narrator reads him a book to try and calm him down.
Usher says he kept hearing voices for days after the burial of his sister. He says that they have buried her alive. After hearing what sounded like steps turned out to be Madeline. She falls on Usher and kills him.
After the last family member dies the house falls apart and is swallowed up by the lake.
