The purpose of a politcal party is to bring people with the same or similar ideas together. They participate in elections and campaign with the hope of holding as many posititons in the government as possible and passing policies that benfit their ideas. For example, following the recent shooting in Uvalde, the democratic party has rasied the idea of stricter gun laws. While this idea is well associated with the liberals, it is not their entire identity.
Strategies of Political Parties
Education Political parties educate people about civic duty and the importance of voting, and also about specfic policies they are campaigning with. They want to make sure everyone has a clear idea of what they are promoting so that they can win as many votes as possible. One way they can educate, and in instance with gun laws, is through statistics. There is proof that gun violence has been rapidly increasing.
Nominate CandiadatesPolitical parties nominate candidates to run in elections. They pick people who best represents their beliefs. They make promises to change policies if they are elected. For example, in 2020 Donald Trump ran with the promise that the 2nd amendment rights would not be infringed upon and people would continue to have the right to bear arms.
Strategies of Political Parties
Media Political parties use media to influence the public. They will say or do radical things with the hope of gaining media attention. People tend to over-rely on media for their information, and they do not do as much of their own research. Therefore, media is incredibly influential. For example, people are pushing for more gun laws. A big reason for this is that with media, we are able to get more information and details about these shootings that are occuring. People are becoming more aware. It is also a lot easier to spread information via social media, and it reaches a lot of people.
Interest groups are oganizations of people with shared policy goals. Unlike political parties, interest groups are policy experts and put all of their efforts toward one specific policy. Their main function is to put pressure on policy makers. For example, following the Uvalde shooting, new interest groups emerged or gained fuel as they advocated stricter gun laws. That is their entire identity and goal.
Interest Groups
LobbyingLobbying is essentially a legal way of pestering the government until policy changes are made. It can be anything from meetings with government representatives to negotiating the details of a bill. School shootings have been a huge issue that has caused lobbying on both sides. Some are pushing for stricter laws pertaining to the capacity of the magazine allowed, and others are pushing for laws allowing teachers to carry guns for protection.
Strategies of Interest Groups
Pac'sPolitical Action Committees raise and distribute money to parties and candidates during elections. The interest group that supports a policy will give that candidate money so they can continue their campaign and have a better chance at getting elected and passing the policy. Somebody who wants stricter gun laws would typically provide support to the democratic candidate and someone who wnats to excersicethe 2nd amendment right would support the republican candiadte.
Strategies of Interest Groups
EducationInterest groups are policy experts. Considering they are experts and put all their efforts into one policy, they have a lot of information to share. Spreading this information and educating the pulic can be very influential. Sometimes people are not fully aware exactly what something means. These geoups can clear that up and gain their support. For example, a group wanting stricter gun control laws could share information on the mechanics of guns an componets such as the magazine as well as explain how this is dangerous. Then they could explain how their new policy would fix this.
