- Offred
- Offred lives as a Handmaid under Commander Waterford. She wears the colour red which represents fertility and her assigned duty of being a surrogate for the Commander and Wives (Fred and Serena Waterford). In her life before Gilead, she had a different name, a husband (Luke) and a daughter. Her husband's fate remains ambiguous while her daughter was adopted into a foster family. In her life under Gilead, she was renamed as "Of Fred" showing that Commander Waterford owns her. This also takes away her sense of identity distancing her from pre-Gilead times. Throughout the novel she becomes 'starved' for her autonomy and freedom and clings on to hope.

- Commander (Fred) Waterford is the husband of Serena Joy. He is one of the higher ranking men in Gilead and the patriarch of the household. He wears a black uniform which represents authority and power. His guilt for the Handmaids leads him to make their life bearable by giving them remnants of what was left from the pre-Gilead era. Despite this, he feels no sympathy for what the Handmaids went through, which is why he doesn't make any changes in the system of Gilead since he is in a position of ambiguous government power. He is essentially a hypocrite that claims men (and women, but more biased towards men) don't get enough freedoms and uses it to justify breaking the rules by disguising Offred as a prostitute at Jezebels.

- Moira
- Moira was once a Handmaid that escaped the Red Centre by impersonating an Aunt. She is eventually recaptured and, instead of being sent to the colonies, she is sent to Jezebels to work as a prostitute. In the beginning of the book, Moira is a fierce rebel that is outspoken about her beliefs. But at the chapter where Offred meets Moira at Jezebels, she becomes resigned towards her role as a prostitute by telling Offred the benefits, becoming apathetic towards her fate.
