In the 1700's Martha's Vineyard had a large Deaf Population. Sign language was commonly used by both Deaf and hearing people.
Gallaudet believed Alice deserved more, so he decided to travel to Europe to learn how deaf students were educated
his first stop was in Braidwood school in England, but the teachers refused to share their methods.

In Connecticut, DR. Mason Fitch Cogswell was raising his daughter Alice. After getting sick, Alice lost her hearing.

As Alice Cogswell grew older, her family realized there were no schools in America where Deaf children could learn

One day, A young teacher named Thomas Gallaudet met Alice. He began teacher her letters and quickly saw how capable she was.

Disappointed, Gallaudet went to France and met Abbe Sicard, who believed Deaf people should be taught using sing language

Abbe Sicard introduced Gallaudet to Laurent Clerc, a Deaf teacher, and to Jean Massieu, a successful deaf student who proved sign language worked.

At the institute National de Jeunes Sourds de Paris, Gallaudet saw Deaf students learning and communicating through sign language every day.

Gallaudet asked Laurent Clerc to travel back to America with him to helps start a Deaf school

On April 15th, 1817, The American School for Deaf opened- The first Deaf school in America and the start of ASL in the US.
