Hello granddaughter! Have you ever learned about AIM in school?
Hi grandpa! What is AIM? I've never heard about that before.
AIM was the American Indian Movement and its commander was Dennis Banks (Anishinaabe).
Wow, I've never heard of him either! What were the goals of the movement?
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s AIM brought Native Americans together in protest of many negative actions like the high unemployment rates, police brutality, and poor living conditions among Natives.
I never knew about the hardships that Native Americans went through so the AIM seems definitely like the right choice.
AIM's biggest goal was to give Indians a reason to fight for their freedom. Freedom of participating in their religion, speaking their language, loving their culture without the constant fear of something bad happening to them.
It is really sad to hear about this!
AIM and religion went hand in hand because Native Americans kept getting whitewashed by Europeans and ultimately not allowed to practice their religion. They were taught that their dances were uncivilized and that their ceremonies were barbaric but all they did was pray.
I am so angry to hear about the discrimination and disrespect they went through!
Nowadays, thankfully things have gotten better with AIM and there isn't as much discrimination toward Natives!
