  • Long ago in the 18th Century, the British achieved dominance and power over India. Under British Rule, India had to adapt to colonial imperialism as they were being exploited to labor, wealth, and resources. Thus, the British East India Company was born, a place where the British can become actively involved in India's political and military affairs. Eventually, this trading company hired Indian soldiers known as sepoys in order to provide protection and support over the company's interests.

  • However, in 1848, a British man known as Lord Dalhousie, who wanted extreme control and colonial influence over India, introduced such cruelty towards the royalty (Or Brahmans) of India by devising the Doctrine of Lapse, which brutally states that once a Hindu Ruler has passed or abdicated with no male heir, his kingdom would be legally passed over to the British. This not only gave discontent towards the Brahmans, but allowed motivation and reasoning for them to take part and support a rebellion that would be further advocated by the Sepoys.

  • In 1857, there was a growing Indian distrust that eventually led the Sepoy rebellion. One day, there was a rumor that the British greased the Sepoy's and their own Enfield rifles with cow and pig fat. Because the cow was sacred to Hindus and the pig was taboo to Muslims, the group of sepoys refused to load their rifles with the cartridges. The British however, simply humiliated them and found this hysterical due to the sepoys saying that biting or even touching the greased cartridges to their lips would declare themselves to be polluted.

  • However, what the British did not realize was that this sign of disrespect was one of the immediate causes of what they called "Sepoy Mutiny". At the same time of year, a Sepoy named Mangal Pandey fired a single shot at a British Soldier and was eventually executed doing so. Thus, this sudden act is what inspired the whole rebellion as this humiliation and imprisoning from the British Soldiers is what enraged the whole Sepoy community. Once the Sepoys gathered themselves, they marched towards the city of Delhi and went on a rampage; killing 50 European men, women, and even children.

  • Eventually, the Brahmans tagged along with the rebellion and aided the Sepoys also due to their mistreatment with the British and the so-called "Doctrine of Lapse" frustrated their ego. As the mutiny went on, this soon became an eyesore to the British once the Indians suddenly massacred 200 defenseless women and children in the "House of the Ladies" located at Kanpur. Without further delay, the British gathered around 230,000 loyal British and Indian Troops to fight the small Sepoy union consisting of only 45,000 Troops. In only a year, the British stood Triumphant over the Sepoys as they claimed back their power and as punishment, executed the Indians who fought and sided with the Sepoys.

  • In the end however, the British Parliament abolished and transferred the powers of the East India Trading Company to their own government. Additionally, a change of inheritance of India occurred as Britain's Queen Victoria became queen of India. This change in Hierarchy not only secured even more control over the population of India, but upsetted the Indians because their beloved country now only became a "jewel" for the British to wear. However, despite the Sepoy Rebellion taking a dramatic turn for the Indians, this rebellion also fueled Indian nationalism and inspired the cause of independence which changed imperialism in South Asia forever.
