  • Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt
  •
  • Theme
  •
  • Theme Development #1
  • "Then why don't you come with us(3.26)?"
  • "Because he's going to finish that picture one way or another," Greta said, not even bothering to look up at me. "And, anyway, you know as well as I do that if he could have, he wouldn't have even put me in the portrait. It would have been just his darling Junie, all on her own(3.28)."
  • Progress Check #3: Theme by J.D. Petro
  • Theme Development #2
  • "Did you ever think I might have problems?" I said. "That I might be dealing with ... situations(41.59)?"
  • "Poor old Mrs. Lucky. Poor troubled Mrs. Special," she said. "Maybe I should go out and get myself AIDS. Then everyone can come fawning around me and(41.60)-"
  • A significant theme in this story is jealousy and its impact on relationships. In the story, Greta is feeling jealous of June's relationship with Uncle Finn. Greta is envious of the attention Finn gives June, and as a result, she decides to stop visiting him. After Finn dies, June starts to spend more time with Toby even though Greta wants June to spend more time with her. This further exacerbates the situation, and highlights how jealousy can affect a relationship.
  • Theme Development #3
  • "You still go to see him?" she asked(54.27).
  • "Why should I tell you anything? You sit there ... You sit there like we're best friends or something. Inviting me to parties, always in my business. Well, I've had enough. The. End(54.30)."
  • This scene illustrates the resentment Greta feels about the family portrait Finn painted. Greta believes that Finn favors June and made her the center of attention in the painting. Greta feels isolated and rejected and, as a result, stops going to Finn's house to finish the portrait. Greta feels that her attendance does not matter, and Finn will finish the portrait without her. Greta's jealousy of June's relationship with Finn causes her to treat her sister badly.
  • Thematic Solution
  • The theme is furthered developed in this scene when June finds Greta drunk in the woods for the second time. Greta states that June only gives attention to people in need and the only way she could get her attention is if she was sick. Greta is jealous of the attention June gives to people infected with AIDS. Greta feels left out and lonely, and she wants June to make their relationship a priority. She continues to take her anger out on June, and their relationship continues to decline.
  • The theme continues to develop in this scene when June gets mad when she feels that Greta is acting like they are best friends when she rarely spends any time with her. Greta is mean to June, and she believes June would rather hang out with Toby than spend time with her. She misses her sister, and she is jealous of the time June spends with Toby.
  • My prediction for the final theme development is that June and Greta will reconcile and re-establish their relationship. I think that Greta will end her jealousy of June, and they will become friends once again. I believe their relationship as sisters will grow stronger when they put this situation behind them and treat each other kindly. In the story Greta says, "I don't want us to be mean anymore (59.48)." This quote strengthens my belief that the sisters will become friends again.
