- Men, women, and children were headed inside the church, where the youngest minister, Rev. Hooper, was to give a sermon. He was also heading to the church , wearing a black veil, where people felt afraid and perplexed by his clothing.
- When giving his sermon of the day, the people in the church are thinking that Hooper has gone insane, but are moved by his sermon. He does try to greet the people who were there that day, but , intimidated by Hooper"s appearance, don't want to approach him.
