- Montresor requested for Fortunato to be careful as they were going down the stairs. This shows verbal irony because Montresor is about to murder Fortunato.

- This shows dramatic irony because Montresor is not trying to protect Fortunato. He is trying to make Fortunato more vulnerable.
- "A draught of this Medoc will defend us from the damps."
- We should go back.
- This shows verbal irony because Montresor is lying to Fortunato to keep his trust.

- This shows dramatic irony because it seems that Fortunato does not know what this quote means, as he just replies with "Good!" Fortunato has no idea what Montresor is about to do to him.
- "Nemo me impune lacessit."

- This shows verbal irony because Fortunato can no longer return because he is chained up.
