- when the story opens, Della and Jim are living in a simple flat on $20 a week. It is Christmas Eve and Della is dreaming of buying a gift for Jim.
- I only have $1.87 and its not enough to buy a gift for Jim
- Della went to Madame Sofronie wag's shop to sell her long beautiful hair, She got $20 and uses it to purchase a platinum chain for Jim's watch.
- Jim sold his watch to buy Della a gift.
- Jim and Della exchanged their gifts, And none of them can use it because Della brought for Jim a chain for his watch and Jim brought for Della a set of combs.
- Jim and Della decided to put their gifts away until they can use it, Jim and Della still love each other and they learnt a valuable lesson about sacrifice and love.
