Storyboard Text

  • "She looked exactly the same as when she’d left at sixteen—still light, her skin the color of sand barely wet. Her hipless body reminding him of a branch caught in strong breeze" (Bennet, 3)
  • Desirre is a fair skinned African American woman, who's fairly thin
  • Once Desiree arrives back in Mallard she becomes a waitress to make ends meet.
  • At Lous Egg House, Desiree Vignes learned how to balance plates of scrambled eggs and bacon and toast. Grits swirled with butter, thick pancakes sopping with syrup. She learned how to navigate around tiny tables, turn a sharp corner without losing a coffee cup, memorize orders.
  • Desirre is a person who, even as a teenager, lived in the present tense. She was wilder and more open than Stella
  •  "On Sunday nights, Stella ironed her clothe for the entire week, unlike Desiree, who rushed around each morning to find a clean dress and finish the homework crushed in the bottom of her book bag." (Bennet, 9)
  • Desiree disliked living in Mallard because of the smallness and views of the town.
  • "The idea hadn’t been Stella’s at all—during that final summer, it was Desiree who’d decided to run away after the picnic. Which should not have been surprising, perhaps. Hadn’t she, for years, told anyone who would listen that she couldn’t wait to leave Mallard?" (Bennet, 7)
  • One thing that Desirre thinks aliot about, besides her daughter, is her twin sister Stella
  • "In Mallard, Desiree saw Stella everywhere. Lounging by the water pump in her lilac dress, slipping a finger down her sock to scratch her ankle. Dipping into the woods to play hide-and-seek behind the trees. Stepping out of the butcher’s shop carrying chicken livers wrapped in white paper, clutching the package so tightly, she might have been holding something as precious as a secret" (Bennet, 39)
  • Someone that Desirre loves  is her daughter, Jude
  • “I still don’t know why you wanna go all the way out to California,” shesaid. “There’s some perfectly good schools right here.”She laughed a little, as if she were kidding, as if she hadn’t been trying to convince Jude to stay. They both knew that she couldn’t." (Bennet,83)
