Michael Faraday formulated the principle behind electromagnetic induction. It is a seminal breakthrough which laid the groundwork for later researchers such as James Clerk Maxwell, and led to important inventions such as electric motors, transformers, inductors, and generators.

James Clerk Maxwell contributed in developing equations that showed the relationship of electricity and magnetism. He noticed that electrical field and magnetic field can couple together to form electromagnetic waves.
