The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War happened from 1955 to 1975 in Vietnam. It was a prolonged conflict between the communist government of North Vietnam and the government of South Vietnam, and the United States.

Following Vietnam's division in 1954 into a communist North and democratic South, the U.S. began supplying financial and military support to the South Vietnamese government. By 1961, President Kennedy escalated this aid, driven by the fear of a "domino theory" in Southeast Asia. In response, under Ho Chi Minh, North Vietnam framed its conflict as a quest for unification, linking it to its prior struggles against Japanese and French rule. Their ultimate aim was to consolidate control over Indochina.

HOW IT ENDED AND RESULT
The Vietnam War lasted from 1954 to 1975, pitting North Vietnam and its Viet Cong allies against South Vietnam, which sought to maintain a Western-aligned government. The U.S. became heavily involved, deploying over 500,000 troops by 1969, while the Soviet Union and China supported the North. After the U.S. began withdrawing in 1973, South Vietnam fell to an invasion by the North in 1975. The conflict resulted in devastating casualties and left Vietnam in ruins, reshaping its politics and leaving the U.S. with a demoralized military and a divided population.
