- To enact the device, Maria drops the letter on a path in Olivia’s garden. As she flees the scene, she assigns Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Fabian to listen in on Malvolio from behind the box trees.

- In Olivia’s garden…
- Malvolio arrives in the garden and notices the letter on the ground. He is surprised but delighted in seeing that it is addressed to M. O. A. I. — letters that are all in his name. He continues to read the letter, believing every word, dreaming up a lavish life with Olivia.

- In Olivia’s garden…
- When Malvolio leaves, Maria returns to see how the device went, laughing with Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Fabian about how Malvolio will act toward Olivia now that he thinks Olivia is in love with him! Exeunt.
