  • Many people faced extreme poverty in the war years - the winter of 1918 was known as ‘turnip winter due to a lack of food.
  • Rationing was unsuccessful; it led to the reduction of already scare food resources. This only led to further starvation and public unrest.
  • Britains naval blockade of German ports had starved the country of food and other resources like clothes, medicines, fuels and chemicals. This led to public starvation, unrest and ultimately led to public strike due to lack of pay and food.
  • Coal was also in short supply which led to many widespread power cuts.
  • In 1918, Spanish flu began to spread around Europe including Germany. In 1918, this illness killed around 400,000 German civilians, and also many soldiers too. It is estimated that up to 50 million people died across the world from this flu.
  • At the end of October 1918, discipline in the German navy cracked at the Kiel navy base. The German commanders decided that the soldiers at Kiel navy base should save its honour by sailing out into the North Sea for one last major battle with the British. The German sailors had different ideas; they did not want to risk their lives for a pointless battle. As a result, the sailors at the Kiel naval base refused to attack the British.
