Sojourner Truth was born in 1799-1783 in Ulster County, New York. She was born into a family of 12-14, but her family was separated. 10 of her older siblings were sold before she could remember them.

Sojourner Truth was orignionally named Isabella, but later adopted the name Sojourner. When she was young, her mom, Mau-mau Bett, after a long day of work, would tell her and her younger brother stories about God. Her mom would always say that he was the only one who could "effectually aid" them.

When Sorojourner was only 9 years old, she was sold to John Nealy. There she got instructions from people to do hard work , but she couldn't even understand the instructions; as she only spoke and understood Dutch. This caused a lot of the people, including the mistress to get mad and annoyed with her.
