How did you find work being a stranger in this country?
I think speaking English helped me get work and having friends working here gave me a connection. I worked in the construction industry, so jobs are word of mouth a lot of the time, so having a connection helped me stay employed.
How did you assimilate into the American way of life?
I first arrived in the Bronx, so I lived with the friends I came to visit. At home in London, you always hear stories about the Bronx. The stories aren’t always good, but living here I experienced the life of an average American so I realized a lot of the stories were exaggerated. I was happy to be able to live in America and enjoyed the food and the overall lifestyle. This country helped me become successful and I am grateful for that.
Ok, and the last question I have is how is it having American children?
It is a very different experience because I used to take you guys to baseball, basketball, and flag football which were foreign sports to me. It helped me with my assimilation even more because I was involved in the sports and got to know a lot of American parents. The school system is a bit different as well. In England, we don’t pay for Catholic school, but over here you do. One funny thing is that when I bring you back to England, we are called “The Yanks”. When your sister read at Uncle James’ wedding in London, it was funny to hear the American accent in the church. Everyone enjoyed it.
