  • Hello Ms. Robin, I’m planning to have a LAN at home and I’m trying to think of what Network Operating System should I use.
  • Could you tell me which one is the best NOS to used?
  • Well, I can give you two options, you can select between Peer-to-Peer NOS and Client/Server NOS.
  • Well, as for the peer-to-peer network, aside from being cheap, all devices are all equal, they all have the ability to use the resources available on the network. And it also has no centralized management source, meaning that if one computer goes down, the other devices won’t be affected.
  • Wow, so is this the better one?
  • So, is the Client/Server network the best one?
  • Well, I can’t tell because you also still need to look out for the security of your LAN if you use this NOS, and the performance of the computers may not be that good when sharing some resources. This NOS does not provide the security of your system that the client/server NOS have.
  • Aside from your network being centralized through fileservers and provides both access to resources and security, it is also flexible as new technology can be easily integrated into your system. It also has backup facility for lost data, good performance, it is reliable, and its server can be accessed remotely and across multiple platforms.
  • So this Network Operating System is really the best huh?
  • Well, I can’t really tell, as this NOS can be really expensive, this network may require initial investment in a dedicated server, and the maintenance that it needs from an expert technician could cost you too, since an expert is needed for this network to ensure the operation. And when a server goes down on this NOS, operations will cease across the network, and a huge amount of client request may overload the server.
  • Aghhh!, it just made me more confused on what NOS should I use on my network.
  • Well as for your condition, I suggest the Peer-to-Peer network for your Local Area Network(LAN) at your home, Since peer-to-peer network are designed primarily for small to medium local are networks. This NOS is the best for you as it is still reliable and easier to setup, and it won’t cost you too much.
  • Okay, thank for the advice! Have a good day Ms. Robin.
  • No worries Franky, have a good day too!.
