- When Covey was whipping him, he decided that enough was enough. Douglass was going to stand up to the man who brought pain to his life everyday. The fight took hours, but Douglass managed to defeat Mr Covey.
- After standing up against him, Douglass finally achieved some respect from Covey. His days were now devoid of the painful whippings.
- Douglass was satisfied in his win. It granted him a newfound hope in escaping the sickening scheme of slavery. It gave him more determination to learn and find ways to finally be free and successful.
