  • "Where"
  • Desiree is tired of Mallard and their customs. She decides to form a plan to leave with Stella for good "You know where. I'm tired of talkin about it, let's just go." ( Bennett 13). As we learn later in the text, Desiree seemingly felt this way for years. This answers the question because Desiree constantly thought of leaving and where to go after.
  • Desiree dealt with abuse in her marriage with Sam. This was very surprising to Desiree as she never seen this side of him when initially meeting him. "This was back in the beginning. Before his hands curled into fists, before he called her uppit yellow bitch or crazy as your sister or off thinking you white. Back when she'd found herself starting to trust him." ( Bennett 21 ). Desiree starts to see a new side of Sam. As a result, this ultimately made her leave the relationship due to a newly found dislike for the seemingly new him.
  • After leaving Mallard to New Orleans, she lost contact with Stella. This causes her to feel abandoned and hurt. "And yet, eve after six months, Desiree still held out hope. Stella would call. She would send a letter. But each evening, she groped inside the empty mailbox and waited beside a phone that refused to ring." This quote shows the love Desiree tury has for Stella. Even after seemingly being abandoned by Stella, she never loses hope and continues to try and get in contact with her. She continuously thinks about why her sister left her alone and how she misses her.
  • What does the character think about ?
  • At the beginning of the novel, Lou sees Desiree after being missing fir years. He also sees Jude, which makes him question why has she returned. "Now she was back, Lord knows why. Homesick, maybe . Missing her mother after all those years or wanting to flaunt that dark daughter of hers." (Bennett 4). Desiree returned to Mallard after being in New Orleans. This surprised many of the town goers due to the fat that she was gone for so long.
  • Who do they like / dislike?
  • When Lou initially sees Desiree he is surprised to see her. He continuously looks at her to notice if her features matched the ones from the twin that went missing. "She looked exactly the same as when she'd left at sixteen - still light, her skin the color of sand barely wet." (Bennett 1). Desiree is very light skinned to the point she could pass as white . She is also skinny.
  • What / who does the character love?
  • When Desiree enters her mothers home with Jude, Adele questions her. "What do you expect? You come from God knows where, draggin some child that don't look one lick like you----" (Bennett 24). Adele feels embarrassed due to the fact that it is a custom in Mallard to not marry or reproduce with darker toned people.By Desiree bringing Jude back who is darker than Desiree, it causes frustration between the two.
