Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria- Hungary was driving down a road in Bosnia when his driver took a wrong turn. Gavrilo Princip was in a bar and saw the archduke outside. He shot Ferdinand in the neck and assassinated him. This led to a dominion affect that eventual caused WWI.

After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Serbia and Austria- Hungary declared war on each other.
Because of alliances, Russia came to help Serbia and this led to Germany declaring war on Russia. This officially started World War I.

The war affected soldiers physically and mentally. Trench warfare was a way of fighting that caused soldiers to live in pits in the ground where they caught many diseases like tench foot and dysentery.
Many soldiers also suffered from shell shock. It was a type of post dramatic stress disorder which caused the soldier to go through nightmares, confusion, fatigue, and tremors.
