- a poor native familys little baby had gotten bitten by a scorpion but the family couldn't afford a doctor
- to be able to afford a doctor kino goes searching for a pearl in hope of fortune.
- kino finds the pearl and goes to dealer to get an offer for it but the dealers cheat him
- kino leaves the dealers and starts to head to the capital for a fair offer and gets attacked on the way
- Juana try throwing away the pearl because she believes its evil and kino gets mad and becomes violent
- baby coyotio then gets killed by horse men
