- The events in this part of the story take place in a courtroom in Great Barrington, which is in western Massachusetts. The year is 1781.
- Bett had recently left , Mistress Ashely's House. She was so sad. Bett is a slave. This scene is talks about Bett's Freedom.
- Bett felt worry because if she lost this case she would have to work with her and they would treat her bad
- Bett hears the news that Master Ashley has all right to hold her as her slave.
