- A hardship that they faced was that they were at risk of being attacked by Indians, wolves, bears and fur thieves.

- They left behind the routes that they pioneered across, which then became the Oregon and California Trails.
- Another hardship was that one misplaced step on a mountain, or misjudged river rapid often meant sudden death.
