  • The Articles of Confederation was our form of government in the 1780s' before the republican government we have today. The government had no trade rules, no official currency, no national court system, couldn't tax, and couldn't raise an army.

  • We'll shut down the courthouses!
  • Spain took advantage of the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation by blocking off land in what is now Florida and Louisiana. Without an army, the government was powerless to stop Spain from blocking the area.

  • How will we fix the Articles of Confederation?
  • In order to pay off debt from war, Massachusetts raised taxes on property. This hurt farmers especially hard, because they couldn't pay off the taxes and were either thrown in jail or had to sell their property.

  • The new government shall consist of three branches
  • Lead by Daniel Shay's, a Revolutionary War veteran, he and the farmers rebelled and shut down courthouses, believing they couldn't be taxed. Massachusetts appealed to the government, asking for help, but with no standing army, the state was left to deal with the rebellion on their own. Shay's and his followers were eventually stopped.

  • In 1787, delegates from each state came together to discuss how to improve the Articles of Confederation. This meeting was known as the Constitutional Convention.
  • The members agreed on a new form of government that had three branches. The Legislative Branch, run by Congress, makes the laws. The Executive Branch, run by the president, enforces the laws. Finally, the Judicial Branch, run by the Supreme Court, interprets the laws.
