- Gustave has to leave his home in Paris, France because they do not like Jews there so they moved and had to say goodbye to friends and family.
- Gustave has an idea to help his cousin Jean-Paul and his family get across the demarcation line so they can leave for America.
- Gustave's family and Jean-Paul's family finally get to go to America after they used the black radishes to get over the demarcation line.
