- The Byzantine empire is located in Constantinople between Europe and Asia. It was founded as the new Rome.
- Emperor Constantine of Rome decided to move the capital of the Roman Empire to the city of Byzantium, which he renamed the city of Constantinople. This was also called the “New Rome”.
- The Bosporous strait connects the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea. It was a very strategic waterway. It was one of the only passages from the Black Sea into the Mediterranean Sea.
- Constantinople was very rich and successful because it was in the middle of land, sea and trade routes. It also had a strong military. Some of the items that were traded were oil, wine, salt, fish, meat, vegetables, perfume, and spices.
- Constantine was one of the most popular emperors. He is known for being the first Christian Roman emperor and issuing the Edict of Milan .

- Justinian was also one of the most popular emperors in Rome. He is known for making his code of laws, and driving the Vandals, Huns, and Franks from Italy.

- People saw Constantine as a good leader. Constantine expanded the empire, built roads and structures, and moved the capital to Byzantium.

- Justinian was not a very popular ruler because he had harsh punishments and heavy taxes.
