Russia was brought by their allies into World War 1, which required many resources to maintain. By 1917, Russia had one of the highest casualty rates and had spent many resources on it.
Russian Palace
Many people back in Russia suffered from corruption in the government and the total war effort. Groups of working people formed groups called Soviets mainly led by Lenin, protested the Tsar. They wanted the Tsar to end their involvement in World War 1, and the Tsar to step down.
Brest-Litovsk, Belarus (1917)
Troops and protesters attacked the Tsar, and he was forced to step down. The troops were led by Leon Trotsky, who worked with Lenin to organize the Soviets and the troops. Joesph Stalin also helped Lenin avoid capture.
Russia (1924)
Then, the Soviets clashed with another group who supported the Duma for power. Ultimately, the Bolsheviks or the Soviets won control of the government. They adopted a socialist government called communism.
Then, the Bolsheviks signed a treaty with Germany to stop their involvement in World War 1, which was quite popular with the people.
Lenin dies in 1924, and Joseph Stalin takes control of the Russia government. Trotsky is exiled from his government position.
