- Della only has a dollar and eighty-seven cents saved after begging for money.
- Jim's pay has been reduced from $30 to $20.
- Della starts to get anxious because tomorrow is Christmas and she doesn't have enough money to buy a nice gift for Jim
- For desperate need for money to buy a gift for Jim she cuts her hair.
- Della was worried that Jim wouldn't love her no more because she cut her hair. In Order to buy a chain for his watch
- But Jim was surprised because his gift to her would be useless because the gift was a set of combs and brushes. He got those by selling his watch.
- They both put there presents away and spent the Christmas together
