Storyboard Text

  • A buzzer sounded in George's head. His thoughts fled in panic, like bandits from a burglar alarm.
  • There were tears on Hazel's cheeks, but she'd forgotten for the moment what they were about.
  • "Ladies and Gentlemen," said the ballerina, reading the bulletin. She must have been extraordinarily beautiful, because the mask she wore was hideous.
  • It was then that Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General, came into the studio with a double-barreled ten-gauge shotgun.
  • "What about?"
  • "You've been crying."
  • "I forget. Something real sad on television."
  • "Yup."
  • "You can say that again."
  • "Gee - I could tell that one was a doozy."
  • "Gee - I could tell that one was a doozy."
  • In Harrison Bergerson, Kurt Vonnegut makes the point that people who are too smart or too beautiful are "handicapped" to make them equal with everyone else. He uses Hazel as an example of someone who is already average and does not need to be handicapped. George, Harrison, and the one ballerina all are above average and need to be handicapped. This story makes fun of people who want everyone to be perfect and equal. He also makes fun of the results of this society, which is that everyone is not very intelligent. The people in this story also forget things very easily which makes them struggle even more, especially with their emotions.
