"Someone was screaming. No, not screaming. Wailing... Someone said the word 'fumes'" (124).
Once the refugees exit the oil tanker after reaching Pakistan, Amir hears Kamal's father screaming and sobbing. Kamal had stopped breathing and died from the fumes of the truck.

After moving to America, Baba feels disconnected from everything he has known in Kabul. He feels insulted by the store clerk and takes it as a sign of distrust, despite this being normal in the U.S. He also lost his social status when he arrived in America.
"'Almost two years we've bought his damn fruits and put money in his pocket and the son of a dog wants to see my licence!... No one trusts anybody!'" (127-128).
"'Baba it's not personal... They're supposed to ask for an ID'" (127).

"A slim-hipped beauty with velvety coal black hair... I blinked, my heart quickening... Her eyes, walnut brown and shaded by fanned lashes, met mine. Held for a moment. Flew away" (140).
After speaking with General Taheri and Baba, Amir meets Soraya, the General's daughter. Immediately Amir shows interest in her, foreshadowing their future relationship.
