- June (Jing-mei) Woo sits at the Joy Luck Club gathering with the three aunties. They reveal her mother's long-held secret—that she had twin daughters in China.

- “My sisters are sending me money?”
- “No, no! We add just a little, so you can go to Hong Kong, take a train to Shanghai, see your sisters. Besides, we all getting too rich, too fat.”
- “I am crying now, sobbing and laughing at the same time, seeing but not understanding this loyalty to my mother.”
- Aunties hand June the letter from her sisters and the check for her trip to China. She holds the paper with shaking hands, overwhelmed.

- “You must see your sisters and tell them about your mother’s death. But most important, you must tell them about her life.”
- “What will I say? What can I tell them about my mother? I don’t know anything. She was my mother.”
- “Not know your own mother? How can you say? Your mother is in your bones!”
- “I will tell them everything.”
- The aunties lean in, anxiously urging June to tell her sisters about their mother. June looks uncertain at first, but then finds resolve.
