  • At the top of the feudal hierarchy we have the royalty king and queen. This level is responsible for ruling the entire land. The monarch would grant the nobles land in exhcange for loyalty and military.
  • The next level below the monarch are the lords, or nobles. They send a certain amount of armed soldiers/knights when called upon by the monarch. They pay taxes to the moarch and devote their loyalty to them. They are responsible for enforcing laws and maintaing their land.

  • Next in line we have the knights, or the vassals. Knights are chosen by the monarch and fight in wars when needed to defend the lords. They were also offered split land in exchange for their loyalty and skills. They had to be true to their word and brave.

  • At the bottom of the system we have the serfs or peasants. They were the most common and were just regular people in the village. They were offered protection and a place to live in exchange for farming the land and taking on other jobs requested by the lord.
  • In conclusion, the feudal system offered security and order when they lacked a central government. Of course it had its own flaws because in order for it to work everyone had to cooperate. If loyalty was taken away, the system could start to fail.
