  • many years ago we were under the Indian act. While we were under it we were called Indians for legal reasons.
  • way back to the 1400 to 1900 we were called Indians by the British government
  • not to get u confused with Indians that originate from southern Asia

  • As time passed on people started to recognize that the term Indian was a little out dated and could be viewed as racist.
  • now we are called Indigenous because we are indigenous to the land and we originated from this land.
  • Many Indigenous people are from different nations For example I am Metis But there are other tribes like First Nations and Inuit.

  • This is why it is important to recognize peoples different culture. When I was young I thought Indians and First Nations were the same and meant the same thing, little did I know they were two completely different names that meant very different things.
