A British commander comes in and makes the same deal, "Sign on with a British ship, or stay here." Most of us stare at the floorboards, knowing that choosing to join the British would mean turning our backs on everything we've fought for. The officers don’t understand why so many of us choose death over service, but we know. We know that our freedom, even in chains, is worth more than their promises.
