- Nothing bad will ever happen to our perfect way of living!
- Yes ma'am!
- Alright everyone! Time to start harvesting these trees. Boss wants us to do this every time we see leaves, so we will be checking back every so often
- OH NO! WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO NOW!
- Actually, we're doing pretty fine now that we can blend in to our surroundings
- In the orange trees of a forest close to the city, there lived butterflies. These butterflies had different traits. Most of them were a bright orange so as to blend in with the foliage. Some others were brown and others were a green color, but they were more at risk to be eaten since they could not camouflage as well as the others.
- Aw man
- Oh cool, a snack
- One day, something bad happened. A manufacturing company decided to regularly harvest the leaves of the orange trees to use them in one of their new products
- With this sudden change in environment, the butterflies now faced several problems. Since the orange ones were no longer able to blend in, they were now at risk of being eaten by predators. However, the brown butterflies found a new way to survive in the form of blending in with the tree bark.
- Hooray! Life is good again!
- Meanwhile, green butterflies were now forced to remain close to the grass since they had no cover in the leaves, but they could blend in with the grass. Unfortunately, this didn't last long since there were even more dangers on the surface.
- As time went on, the trait for brown colored wings began to be passed down to newer generations since it was a preferable trait that increased chances of survival. As a result, the amount of orange butterflies decreased significantly, and the amount of brown butterflies increased dramatically.
- Things are getting better now
- In the end, this population of butterflies were forced to adapt to their changed environment, relying on previously unfavorable traits and undergoing natural selection in order to thrive. Now, the population consists entirely of brown winged butterflies.
