I forced a laugh, trying to keep things light. “In a different form?” I asked, confused. “Oh, yes,” she said with a gentle nod. “They’re still here. Just... not in the way you might think.”

All I could hearwas the sound of her slow footsteps approaching. “I—I don’t understand,” I gasped. “You will,” she said, her smile widening unnaturally, “in time.”
