- Hello Farmer Joe, I wanted to know a little basic about agriculture, mainly Subsistence Agriculture.
- The type of agriculture that is practised for the domestic consumption is called subsistence agriculture. They may sell or exchange their product but no commercial sale is involved. There are two types of subsistence agriculture: primitive and intensive subsistence agriculture.
- Oh ok, can you further elaborate on the two types of subsistence agriculture. I find it interesting.
- Primitive subsistence agriculture includes two types, shifting agriculture and nomadic herding.
- Ok, so how are shifting agriculture and nomadic herding done?
- Shifting cultivation is a primitive method of farming practiced by tribals living in the dense tropical forests. They clear a patch of forested land by cutting and burning the trees and bushes. Mostly tuber crops like tapioca, cassava are grown together with some maize, millets etc.
- Ok, What about nomadic herding?
- Nomadic Herding is practiced by nomadic people who graze their animals on natural pastures. The herders move from one place to another in search of fodder and water supply. Nomadic herding is confined to sparsely populated parts of the world.
- What about intensive subsistence agriculture?
- Intensive subsistence agriculture is practiced in densely populated regions in the world. Land holdings are small and farming is intensive. Large amount of human labor and simple tools are used. Farm machines are used and optimum utilization of the land is made. Ex: Millet, Wheat, Rice etc.
