  • The meeting of the Estates Generals happened on May 5th, 1789. It was summoned by King Louis XVI to discuss the crucial financial problems France was having. He was hoping that maybe they could find a solution. Their final decision was to tax the third estate even more than they were before. The third estate was already financially troubled and this certainly did not help. They didn't like the idea so much that they started their own group called the National Assembly. This was very big and the starting point of the revolution.
  • THE DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF MAN AND CITIZEN

  • The Tennis court Oath happened on June 20th, 1789. The third estate was locked out of the Estates General building by King Louis XVI because they were demanding more say in the meetings since they made up 97% of France's population. King Louis XVI thought that this would stop them, but he was wrong. Instead, they went to the next nearest building that would hold them all. There, they signed a document and vowed to never separate and to reassemble wherever necessary until the constitution of the kingdom is established. This was a huge step forward for the third estate.
  • THE REIGN OF TERROR

They also hoped to free some of the political prisoners that were held there. De Launay was the French governor of Bastille and when they got there he tried to make the surrender. The revolutionists refused and demanded that they lower the drawbridge. Eventually, De Launay and his men lowered the bridge and the revolutionaries attacked. Unfortunately for them, there were only seven prisoners and no ammo or weapons. Angered, the revolutionists took down De Launey, beat him then beheaded him and carried him through the streets. This caused many outrages and wasn't the best way to get their point across.

People were publicly executed for any reason, whether serious or ridiculous. This was led by Maximilien Robespierre and the Jacobins. This caused mass outrage and hysteria, people were fearing for their lives. It was a huge set back for the revolution.
