Lady Macbeth - Power and Gender

- This is Lady Macbeth. She is frustrated because no one takes her seriously. This is because she is a girl. She thinks that, if she was more like a man, people would listen to her.
- Don't let me get distracted by the silly things that girls worry about.
- Stop me from feeling any remorse (remorse means you're sorry for doing something bad).
- Make me strong like a man!
- Make me really mean and cruel. I don't want to be gentle at all.
- I really, really, REALLY want to be king, but Duncan is the king right now. If I want to be king, I'll have to kill Duncan....
- This is Macbeth. He wants to be king, but he also knows that killing the current king is a REALLY bad idea.
- But it's really bad to kill the king. He's a good king, and I'm supposed to be loyal to him. What will I do?
- You need to kill Duncan if you want to be king!
- Are you serious? We can't kill the KING. That's insane!
- Lady Macbeth insists that Macbeth WILL kill the Duncan. She tells him he's not a real man if he doesn't go through with it.
- Oh yes, you will kill the king. If you don't, you're not a real man. You're a chicken!
- Don't you talk to me like that! I am a man because I do my job, which is to be loyal to the king.
- Lady Macbeth makes fun of Macbeth. She tells him he's more like a kitten than a man if he breaks his promise and doesn't go through with killing Duncan.
- Rubbish. Are you a man...or are you just a big coward? Or maybe you're more like a cute little kitten?
- ...and remember, you promised to kill Duncan for us. It will be pathetic if you break your promise.
- ...
- Lady Macbeth wins the argument and she tells tells Macbeth what to do next. SHe wants him to look innocent so no one suspects that he's going to stab the king.
- That's what I thought. Now, here's what you need to do. Look like you're totally innocent, like a flower, but go through with the murder so we can be king and queen. No one will suspect anything if you don't look guilty.
