Popes VS Monarchs

Storyboard Text

  • This guy is powerful, I should be careful...
  • I will spread the church to the ends of the earth!
  • HEY! Take your shoes off before entering!
  • King Henry IV is worried that the pope will have too much power over the kingdom. The King wants the pope gone, he thinks that the churches have too much power. The king has always challenged people that try to take his power, like Byzantine rulers who called themselves Roman Rulers, and in this case, the church
  • The pope wants more power over the monarchy than the king. Even though he has given permissions and abilities to both the king and himself, his primary goal is to have a kingdom mostly or entirely ruled by the church. The conflict has only just begun between the church and the monarchy, and it is about to get much worse.
  • I forgive you now, you can come back in.
  • The king then proceeds to ignore all of the pope's rules, thinking that he is the all-powerful force in the kingdom. He is wrong, the church has had more power than he had thought before, and for a long time. The church's following makes a powerful piece in the kingdom puzzle.
  • AHH!!!
  • After being disrespected by the king, the pope and the church excommunicated Henry IV from the church. The king was left out in the snow begging and pleading to be let back in. The pope would not budge, as he believed that the church was to closest to god they could get, and the pope was very angry that the king had tried to take that away.
  • GET OUT!!
  • But finally, the pope forgave the king, and let the king back into the church. The king was still very angry at the pope and didn't forgive him for what he did. The battle was about to begin.
  • The king throws a right hook, but the pope ducks under it. The pope uppercuts the king, but he takes it. They both punch each other in the face at the same time, knocking each other out. They probably should have made an agreement on who could appoint bishops called the Concordat of Worms...But in real life, the king sent all military forces to drive the pope out of the kingdom, and it worked. But this wasn't a healthy process to repeat throughout history, so many years later, the kings and popes made an agreement called the Concordat of Worms, which set rules and permissions on how, when, and who exactly could appoint bishops.
