In general policy, funding, and research has deemed Autism as a deficit in need of a cure. However these things need to be redirected into how to make society accessible to people with Autism.
Policy/people need to see that 'Autism is not a way of being. It is not possible to separated the person from the Autism.' (20)
We need to remove the stigmatism of accommodations/modifications being seen as special treatment. Schools need to continue working towards making learning accessible for everyone with out all the obstacles.
I want thrive academically but I have issues comprehending abstract ideas and testing in a typical class settings.
It is important that you advocate for your needs and learn strategies that help you. Seeking accommodations is not special treatment. It is equity.
