  • I promise I will not interfere with state's rights. It is against the law to secede! We need to preserve the Union!
  • March 4th, 1861 Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address
  • In his first Inaugural address, Abraham Lincoln wanted to keep the Union together. Since the issue was states' rights, he promised not to interfere with individual states' rights - meaning if the Southern states wanted slavery, they could keep it. Last, he claimed seceding from the United States was illegal; another effort to keep the South in the Union.
  • In his second Inaugural address, the Civil War had been ongoing for 4 years. He changed the speech from preserving states' rights to talking about the "sins of slavery". He vowed the war would continue until slavery ends.
  • March 4, 1865 Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address
  • The Sins of Slavery must be stopped! We will fight until it does!
