- Even if the Greasers win, everything stays the same.
- Ponyboy is having an internal struggle (man v. self) because he feels Darry doesn't love him because he hit him (Ponyboy). On page 50 its says "It was plain to me that Darry doesn't want me around. And I wouldn't stay if he did." This shows Ponyboy truly feels that Darry doesn't want him.
- Darry and Ponyboy are having a fight (man v. man) On page 50 it says, "Darry slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door."
- Randy and Ponyboy are talking about the upcoming rumble. On page 117 it says, "You can't win, even if you whip us. You'll still be where you were before-at the bottom." This shows that no matter what happens, the Socs will always win. This is an example of man v. society.
