- By convention sweet is sweet, bitter is bitter, hot is hot, cold is cold, colour is colour; but in truth there are only atoms and the void.
- DEMOCRITUS
- Theory: Everything is composed of atoms, which are physically, but not geometrically indivisible. Between atoms, there lies empty space. Atoms are indestructible.
- Everything is made up of atoms. Atoms are physically indivisible and indestructible. Each atom is always in motion and there are different kinds of atoms.
- JOHN DALTON
- Theory: All matter is composed of atoms, indivisible and indestructible building blocks. While all atoms of an element are identical, different elements have atoms of differing size and mass.
- DEMOCRITUS
- Niels Bohr, a Danish physicist won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1922 for his contribution to the understanding of the atomic model and quantum physics.
- NIELS BOHR
- In Bohr’s model, electrons orbit the nucleus in fixed, circular orbital shells. His model is the first to be based upon quantum theory and was created in 1913.
- Theory: Experiments with cathode ray tubes showed that all atoms contain tiny, negatively charged subatomic particles or electrons. He proposed the Plum-Pudding Model of the atom, which had negatively charged electrons embedded within a positively charged soup.
- J.J. THOMPSON
- Werner Hiesenberg, a German scientist, contributed to the atomic theory in 1927 with his uncertainty principle.
- WERNER HIESENBERG
- His principle is that the exact location of an electron cannot be known, only the places that it is most likely to be.
- ERWIN SCHRÖDINGER
- The quantum mechanical model doesn’t define the exact orbit of electrons, unlike the Bohr model, but instead predicts the locations that have the highest likelihood of being the position of the electron.
- The uncertainty principle led on to the Quantum Mechanical Model by Erwin Schrödinger.
