In Every Last Word, the main character Sam is hiding her OCD from her popular "friends". As school starts again, she meets new people and is scared to tell her other friends, knowing they would not approve.

"What if I'm crazy?" (Stone 9). Sam often questions herself and her sanity, because of her mental struggles. "I look down at the water and run both thumbs over the block's scratchy tape three times," (Stone 13). Sam loves swimming, and it helps give her a healthy outlet.

"Your locker wrapping best friends are actually manipulative?" (Stone 34). Caroline, one of Sam's new friends, seems to know exactly how Sam feels about her other friends."I want to help you, Sam," (Stone 37). Caroline actually cares about Sam's problems and wants to help.
Climax
With Caroline's help, Sam starts using poetry to express her thoughts, and enters into the Poet's Corner group. "I don't know what to write about," (Stone 66). Sam is trying her best to fit in with her new friends.
Sam gets to know her new friends better, including AJ, who ends up being more than just a friend. "That might make it seem like we're becoming friends."..."Maybe we are," (Stone 165).
