The soldier at the corner had yelled. Halte! I had been running to practice for the girls race, but stopped. He then inquired me about the quality of Ellen’s and my performance in school. Then Kristi, all of her grumpy five year old self came over, mad at being left behind.
She has such beautiful hair. Like my daughter.
Kristi, don’t yell at him. Or touch him.
DON’T!

We went to uncle Henrik’s on the train. We were asked about new year’s, and Kristi seemed as if she were to slip, but talked about her shoes, which are made out of fish scales.

Ellen will stay with Uncle Henrik and us at his house.

Ellen had never seen the ocean before, and through the woods, that’s where Uncle Henrik’s house was, by the sea.
It was exciting for all of us.

I had found Mama with a broken ankle, and was setting out to return the packet to Uncle Henrik, when I came across the soldiers with their two attack dogs.

I then chattered on, remembering what my mother had said to me as I left. "If you see any soldiers, act nothing more than a silly girl." So, I tried to act as Kristi would, yelling when they took the bread and fed it to the dogs. then they found the packet, and criticized my mother and Uncle Henrik about the handkerchief that was in there.

Then I went to Uncle Henrik.
