Martin Luther was born in Eiselben, Germany in 1483 Luther began his education at a Latin school in Mansfeld in the spring of 1488.
Ninety-five Theses, propositions for debate concerned with the question of indulgences, written in Latin and posted by Martin Luther on the door of the Schlosskirche (Castle Church), Wittenberg, on October 31, 1517. This event came to be considered the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.
The Theses were quickly reprinted and translated, and distributed throughout Germany and Europe.

in 1521 Pope Leo X formally excommunicated Luther from the Catholic Church. That same year, Luther again refused to recant his writings before the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V of Germany, who issued the famous Edict of Worms declaring Luther an outlaw and a heretic and giving permission for anyone to kill him without consequence.
Luther was protected by powerful German princes, however, and by his death in 1546, the course of Western civilization had been significantly altered.
Luther encourages monks and nuns to leave their abbeys. One nun who followed this call was none other than Katharina von Bora, who fled to Lutherstadt Wittenberg where she would come to meet Luther.
